These files (linked at left) contain basic geographic and geologic information for volcanoes thought to have been active in the last 10,000 years (Holocene).
Summary lists are currently only available in Excel format.
The Excel Workbook file includes, for each volcano, a unique volcano number, volcano name, location, latitude and longitude, summit elevation, volcano type, status, and the time range of the last recorded eruption. Please consult the "Summaries Data Criteria" file for additional information.
Placemark files for use with the Google Earth are available for each volcano. A file with the entire set of Holocene volcanoes is also provided. The pop-up balloons in Google Earth will display a photo (when available), geographic data, and links to more detailed information from the GVP and international volcano observatories or other websites focusing on regional volcanoes. The "Description" file has additional details about the placemarks.
We have several requests for users of these data:
1) Please let us know of corrections or additions (with references or reprints if possible) that will help us improve the data file.
2) Please acknowledge "Smithsonian Institution, Global Volcanism Program" as the data source in any disseminated use of the data file.
3) We would appreciate a copy of whatever published work results from your use of the data.
