Kaikata Seamount is a basaltic-to-dacitic submarine volcano located north of Kaitoku Seamount. The volcano rises 2350 m from the sea floor to within 165 m of the sea surface. Two major summit peaks are oriented NE-SW, with the SW peak being the highest. Hydrothermal activity was observed in 1988 at a depth of 460 m, and the volcano was reclassified as active by the Japan Meteorological Agency.
The Global Volcanism Program is not aware of any Holocene eruptions from Kaikata Seamount. If this volcano has had large eruptions (VEI >= 4) prior to 10,000 years ago, information might be found on the Kaikata Seamount page in the LaMEVE (Large Magnitude Explosive Volcanic Eruptions) database, a part of the Volcano Global Risk Identification and Analysis Project (VOGRIPA).
