Two reports of submarine disturbances, during 1944 and 1951, constitute the only evidence for a submarine volcano NE of Karkar Island. The average sea floor depth in this area is 2000 m and it is not certain that a submarine volcano exists at this location (Catalog of Active Volcanoes of the World).
